Nerdy, Shy, and Socially Inappropriate by Cynthia Kim

The Quick Cut: This book gives you the breakdown on Asperger's by topic from one woman's perspective. Chapters are by topic and include charts with things to remember and look out for on each one.

A Real Review: This was the first book I read after getting diagnosed with Asperger's and it's still my favorite for a VERY good reason. Although it's always important to remember that perspective is everything, Cynthia's is one of the most helpful.

Her chapter breakdowns are fairly broad and the method she uses to narrow down on the specifics within each chapter is not only detailed, but also keeps you intrigued. The charts make great references later on once you've finished the book for looking quickly for patterns in behavior or a specific condition.

This book has it's weaknesses, but it's the best I've read on the topic in the non-fiction column. Sure, I can't 100% relate to her life (she's married with kids, I'm single with animals for kids) I've given this one to family so they better understand me and where I'm coming from, that's so helpful it's been for me! I truly know it can do the same for others.

Upsides:

  • Chapter breakdowns by topic are generic, but information is thorough and detailed within each one.

  • Charts for each chapter make great quick reference guides.

  • The author (from my perspective) was very relatable and explains information without talking down to you.

Downsides:

  • She's married with kids, something I can't relate to on any level as a single woman with animals.

  • There are a few points in the chapters that didn't apply to me and I knew it, so I found myself skipping sections often.

My rating: 5 out of 5
