With You All the Way by Cynthia Hand

The Quick Cut: A teen girl finds her life not going as planned when she walks in on her boyfriend cheating. It gets even more chaotic when she joins her family on vacation in Hawaii and emotions fly. A Real Review: As a teenager, there is a significant amount of peer pressure placed on having relationships and sex. Everyone wants to have it so they are not the only virgin in their friend group. However, sex is much more complicated than it may seem. For Ada, it's highly complicated when she tries to find an opportunity to have it while on vacation with her family in Hawaii. When Ada's plan to lose her virginity to her boyfriend goes awry, she finds it goes completely off track when she catches him cheating on her. She's devastated right before going on vacation with her mom and two sisters in Hawaii. So what does she decide to do while she's there? Find a way to lose her virginity anyways. Will she accomplish what she wants to? Or find it's more complicated than that. I bought this book primarily because the author is Cynthia Hand and I love her writing style. The description certainly interested me enough, especially for such a sensitive topic. In the end, it ticked me off more than anything though. You want to know my issue with this story? None of the characters are mature enough to be having sex. Yes, I'm including the mother in that category. While the mom is there partially for a work conference, she is so self centered she doesn't see that her daughters need guidance. The older sister is clearly rebelling and just wants to pretend being 18 means your an adult. The younger sister is actually acting her age. Ada is problematic as a lead character because she's very melodramatic. Is her boyfriend a bad guy? Yeah. You don't date someone that long without the silent agreement being you are serious. However, Ada should have set expectations and that's on her. Rather than own her part of the blame, she calls everything a mess instead. If you don't want others to tell you what to do, stand up for yourself. However, having sex to have sex isn't a reason. Sex is serious and should only be done when you're ready to live with the consequences. A story with immature characters. My rating: 3 out of 5
