The Invocations by Krystal Sutherland

The quick cut: Three women find their lives intertwined when a serial killer starts killing women one by one.

A real review:

Magic can be powerful, but comes with its own costs. If using it meant being tied to a demon, would you be willing to pay the price? This is a question for Jude.

Jude is the daughter of a billionaire who made a fatal mistake. A deal with a demon went terribly awry, causing her to be tied to it and her soul slowly going necrotic. Zara is desperate to find magic because it's the only way to get her sister back. She was killed by a serial killer almost a year ago. Zara and Jude find their lives connected by their need for a witch to fix their issues: a witch's named Emer Bryne. Can these three women together solve their problems together? Or only make it worse?

The ending of this book does a phenomenal job of tying all the storylines together into one satisfying conclusion, but the getting there was a bit of a slog for me. The beginning didn't entirely pull me in. Of the three, Jude's predicament made her the easiest of the three to be interested in.

Zara is singularly focused on getting her sister back and she's willing to do anything to have her returned. That type of singular goal can create a lot of issues because you ignore the signs of making the wrong choices. It's something she definitely struggles with throughout the story.

Emer has her own dark past that continues to unveil itself as time continues on and she was the toughest for me to relate to. She very much seemed to keep a part of herself hidden away. Considering what is discovered about her past, I can't blame her.

A dark magic story with a very slow start.

My rating: 4 out of 5
