The quick cut: A girl whose twin sister died recently pretends to be her dead sister at her prestigious school, in order to figure out who killed her. Chaos happens when it's harder than she anticipated.

A real review

It's been said that twins always know what is happening with the other. No matter the distance or space, they feel what the other feels. For Luna, this leaves her feeling like a big part of her is gone when her twin sister Solina dies.

Luna knows that her sister was murdered, not the victim of an accident. Still, the cops have already decided that her sister Solina's death was not suspicious. Feeling frustrated by the lack of answers, Luna takes advantage of the opportunity and goes to Kingswood Academy as Solina to find out which of her classmates would have a motive. Can Luna successfully pretend to be her sister? Or will her quest for answers lead to her death?

This book is fast paced and a quick read, which was EXACTLY the type of story I needed. The balance of world building and character development is executed very well here. You get to know the characters enough that they feel real, but also get enough world building to imagine these places. Unfortunately, I was plot holes in the ending fast. Still, it's a minor flaw in my mind as a reader.

Luna worked hard to give her sister the opportunity to really do amazing things. Solina was always the smart one, so working hard to ensure she had the chance to go to a prestigious school was a sacrifice that was worthy in her mind. Solina's death in many ways triggers a life crisis because those sacrifices she's made are suddenly made pointless. It's a stress that pushes the plot forward and is the reason she takes the insane risks she does.

The final reveal was well timed, but didn't make sense to me. It felt like a lot of characters had to ignore the obvious to make it work. The journey to that ending was very fun though.

A dark academia novel with well-balanced development.

My rating: 4.5 out of 5
