The Quick Cut: A mermaid discovers the truth behind her existence and is required to go to great lengths to undo the damage she unknowingly caused. A Real Review: It is a fairly universal feeling to want to do something more with our lives. Whether it's find a soulmate, build a family, or pursue a career you feel passionate about - we all have a drive for something. So how would you feel if you found out the truth behind your existence wasn't what you thought? This is the reality for Simi. Simi used to be human, but she barely remembers that life anymore. She prayed to the gods and became a Mami Wata - a mermaid who collects the souls of those who died at sea and blesses their journey home. It's a seemingly simple task when one day she discovers a boy who is in the water. He isn't quite dead yet when she does the unthinkable: she saves his life. Can she deal with the consequences of her actions? Or will they prove to be more than she can manage? I've had quite the chaotic past few days, so finding time to read has been more difficult than usual. Interestingly enough, this book was perfectly suited to my time crunch. This debut book is written so beautifully that it was easy to slip in and out of that universe when I needed to. It is in many ways an excellent escape if that's the type of reading experience you're looking for. Simi is an intriguing lead character. She's a mermaid now, but used to be a human and it feels like she never quite fit in either life. While she feels her current work is good and important, it does not fulfill her. A part of her life feels like it's missing. That ache feels relatable, but it also felt a bit shallow. I kept hoping for more details that would round her put a character. Instead, this book was so action focused that those opportunities were skipped instead. While there is sure to be a sequel, this story ends on a note that is somewhat satisfying. It's sad, but if you don't want a book that feels too much like a cliffhanger, this one will certainly work. A lovely escape from reality that could've used more character development. My rating: 4 out of 5
