Once Upon a Broken Heart by Stephanie Garber

The quick cut: A girl who believes in true love turns to a fate after finding out her true love is marrying her stepsister. Drama ensues as the deal made with fate causes chaos. A real review: They say you can't fight fate, but can fate fight you? In this story centered around Evangeline's love for Luc, her journey to getting him back creates more chaos than expected. Evangeline is heartbroken after she finds out the love of her life, Luc, is engaged to her stepsister Marisol. She shared her first love, first kiss, everything with him, so how did it go wrong? When she stumbled on the fate of broken hearts, she takes the opportunity to make a deal and try to get him back. Will this deal work or will it create more problems instead? This series feels like it was almost made for me because I'm a big believer in true love and have always been intrigued by mythology. Fates aren't a new concept, but typically writers tend to use the Greek gods in stories along this type. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story and seeing how the fates can interact and create chaos for the humans in this world. Evangeline is emotional and tough, yet naive and soft at the same time. She's such a complex heroine that it makes me want to better understand her (in a good way). These types of complex characters are the greatest because they feel real just reading about them on the page. Seeing how Evangeline interacts with the fate Jacks is easily my favorite highlight of the story. She knows she can't trust him, yet she continues to implicitly do it over and over again. It makes me as the reader wonder what else is going on there. The relationship between these two hopefully grows as the series continues on. My only complaint is how contrived the plot gets as it grows. At points near the end, it felt more complex than it needed to be. It was still fun to read though since the characters interactions are enjoyable to watch. A fun adventure about fate and love. My rating: 4.25 out of 5
