My Salty Mary by the Lady Janies

The quick cut: A mermaid turned pirate enters a contest to become the new Pirate King after Blackbeard is killed by famous pirate hunter Johnathan Barnet.

A real review:

Many people love to imagine what it would be like to live on the seas and be a pirate. Could you make it work and become a Captain? Or would you instead end up walking the plank? This is the life for Mary Read - aka littlest - aka aka the little mermaid.

Mary Read made a deal with the Sea Witch to get legs and live as a human being. Having had her heart broken, she's now working her way up the ranks on a pirate ship. When Blackbeard is killed, a contest is started to crown a new Pirate King. Can she become a pirate captain and the first Pirate Queen?

I love the Lady Janies as authors! The way they take a historical period, add some fantastical elements to it, and give it a happy ending is so unique, educational, and fun. It makes me look forward to each new book they release together. While this latest release definitely upped the cheese ball factor, it was still a pleasure to read from start to finish.

Mary Read is the lead character in this story, but she's far from the only historically based one in this story. She is the one who doubles as the little mermaid though. I loved seeing her journey from heart broken girl to strong pirate captain. It truly does make for a fun and satisfying journey.

I thoroughly enjoyed how the authors took the Sea Witch as a typically written bad guy and made her more misunderstood. The whole book has an overarching theme of how women tend to get blamed as a bad influence or trying to be more than they should.

A fun combination of historical and fantasy novels.

My rating: 4 out of 5
