The quick cut: A town with a bloody past finds it dealing with death again as a killer emerges.
A real review:
Horror films in general come with a campy, meta feeling. Slasher horror films even more so with their high body count and significant losses by the end. Could you survive the death and destruction? For CJ's family, it's a possibility they actively prepare for.
CJ's family lives in Satterville - well known for having two massacres reminiscent of Friday the 13th. Her father was there for both, having been killed at the second. Now her mom and siblings all live in a constant state of preparedness for a killer coming after them again. When CJ gets a manuscript that says the killer is coming back, she gets concerned. Can she keep her family safe from the killer this time?
If you're a fan of horror films and enjoy their meta nature - then you'll love this book. It leans hard into their campy nature and translates that heavily into the story. If you take horror films too seriously, this book will annoy you. For me, I enjoyed every minute of it.
CJ identifies as non-binary (she calls it female asterisk) and is very relatable. She just wants to keep her family safe, even if that feels impossible at moments. She's got friends she can trust and a parent that is unbelievably supportive.
You really do have to be a big fan of the camp and meta nature of horror to enjoy this, but if you do - it's a perfect fit reader wise!
