Funny, You Don't Look Autistic: A Comedian's Guide to Life on the Spectrum by Michael McCreary

The Quick Cut: A comedian with autism talks about his experiences with adapting to socialization and the reactions others have had as he attempts to adjust to neurotypical society.

A Real Review: Anyone on the Autism spectrum knows that the stigma that follows the condition is hard to break and sometimes the hardest part about living with it is explaining to others what it is not. If you've ever went looking for a book that can give a firsthand explanation of what its like to be on the Spectrum AND explain to others what it feels like to be in those shoes, this is the book for you! Michael McCreary was diagnosed as being on the Autism Spectrum at the age of five and he started using comedy as a way to express himself not so long since. Sometimes, well meaning individuals can make this hard when they try to categorize you as disabled or a non-functioning member of society. Michael talks about how he's dealt with these situations throughout his life and explains firsthand many aspects of being on the spectrum that are a shared experience. True story: a co-worker actually mentioned this book and I read it within an evening. He is both funny and very educational in the way he talks about being on the spectrum. The way he explains parts of being on the spectrum (including info dumping for example) breaks it down in ways that anyone can understand and use to further empathize with those who are on the Spectrum. It makes me happy to know that there is an option out there if you're looking for a non-fiction book that can help those closest to you explain why you struggle sometimes. A biography/memoir that wonderfully encaptures the Autism experience. My rating: 5 out of 5
