The quick cut: A nonfiction book about Autism, including a thorough review of what masking is, how to accept yourself, and slowly live a more authentic life.
A real review:
Being your most authentic self as an Autistic individual can feel impossible in society. There is very much this expectation that you try to be and function like everyone else. So how do you be authentically you while not alienating others? These are all questions discussed at length in this book.
Masking is common in the neurodivergent community, but especially so when it comes to Autism. Because we don't instinctively catch on to social cues, we often get othered. In order to avoid these situations, we find tricks to avoid that - and this is what masking is generically. It comes with a lot of consequences that hit your mental health in the long run and can be very difficult to stop.
I was a late diagnosed Autistic woman, which is incredibly common. Due to the diagnosis coming so late, there's a difficulty with identifying problematic behaviors that chip at our mental health and addressing them. This book really does an amazing job at breaking down these behaviors, helping you identify them, and then put it into practice with short exercises. It's such a helpful way to integrate what you're learning to your everyday life.
A must read for neurodivergent individuals and allies!
