Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross

The quick cut: Two rival magic journalists find their emotions tangled when the gods go to war once again and they write letters to one another inadvertently.

A real review:

War is frightening no matter where you go, but when it's the gods starting them? Somehow that makes the stakes even more terrifying. For journalists Iris and Roman, the stakes go beyond their lives when the war gets personal.

Iris is holding her life together by strings. With her brother fighting in the war and not heard from, she's trying to make ends match with an addiction addled mom. Her best hope of making it is becoming a columnist at the Oath Gazette. To hold out hope, Iris writes letters to her brother that somehow end up in the hands of her journalist rival, Roman. Will these letters help her hold out hope? Or end it instead?

Wow. This story takes quite the journey, especially in the end. While Iris and Roman make a great pair and are adorable together, their relationship moves at a breakneck pace that's hard to buy. I know it's fantasy, but can the relationship be believable?

Iris is scared for her brother, who went to fight in the war and has not been heard from. She has so much working against her, but she does what it takes to get answers. She's bold and dedicated to keeping those she loves safe.

Roman is the opposite in many ways. His family is wealthy and have no worries but the ones they put on themselves. However, Roman's life isn't really his own because his father dictates his path. His decisions come down to if he's going to follow the path made for him or carve his own.

The ending was great and definitely makes you want more. I just wish the relationship between Iris and Roman had a slower burn.

A fast paced relationship that breaks believability.
