Call Me Evie by J.P. Pomare

The Quick Cut: A girl is left scrambling for the truth when she finds her memory gone and held hostage in a home by a small beach town. Things get chaotic as the truth comes bubbling back.

A Real Review:

If you found yourself in a new place with no memory of what happened, what would you do? Would you trust the people around you and what they say or would you instead absolutely go searching for the truth? This is the choice that Evie goes frantically running after.

Seventeen year old Evie finds herself waking up in a home by a small beach town, with no memory of what occurred to bring her there. All she knows is that she's living with her Uncle Jim, who continues to ask about what happened over and over again. Jim keeps telling her she did a terrible thing and is trying to save her, but Evie is convinced that can't be the case. Will she find that the truth sets her free or instead imprison her with an uncomfortable reality?

This book is the most delicious slow boil that I've ever read! I will be the first person to admit that I hate those stories that unfurl truths at the pace of a turtle, but this one does it so brilliantly. Each time you find out something new, it just makes you want to read faster in order to see more. This is how slow boil stories should be written: with that perfect dash of truths placed to make your feverish pace rush quicker.

Evie's progression works the same way the story does: in the beginning it is confused and incohesive, but as more time passes, the pieces fall into place. At her heart of hearts, she knows who she is. Its that deep instinct that tells you who you are and what drives you each day. The way she approaches each situation and starts to put the pieces together is not only believable, but flat out frightening. I cannot even imagine being in her shoes and having to figure out how to determine your next move. I loved rooting for her and the quest for truth.

A slow boil story that will drive you mad in the best way possible.
