Unearthly by Cynthia Hand

The Quick Cut: A part angel teen girl moves with her family to a new town in order to fulfill a vision and her destiny. A Real Review: One of the many fictional creatures that have been talked about for centuries is angels. Whether you believe in God or not, the thought of celestial creatures among us have been debated for a very long time. What would you do if you knew they were around? Could anything change? This is a reality for the part angel girl named Clara. Clara Gardner had a generally average childhood, but it all changed when she found out she is a quarter angel. The visions she's been having? They're a snapshot of her destiny and what she is meant to do with her life. To pursue such, her family moves from California to a new town. As she gets to know the people in town though, she begins to struggle with what she is meant to do and what she feels compelled to do. Is her destiny what is in her visions? Or something else? I'm a big fan of the lady Janies books, so it makes sense that I would eventually get around to reading the authors other series. I've enjoyed other Cynthia Hand stories and love mythology, so this one made sense to pursue. As much as I love her writing style though, it took me awhile to get into the story. This one starts as a slow burn and then once it comes together, it really moves quickly. If you enjoy a fast pace like me, the start will be tough but worth it for the ending. Clara is like any other teen girl in the way she wants to look pretty, make friends, and date boys. Where she struggles is with her angel side that requires her to be more than ordinary. There's also so much about her angelic side that her mother keeps hidden from her. It leaves her feeling like she doesn't know herself. Between these two elements, there's a struggle within her. While the reason behind her struggle isn't one we can relate to, the struggle she has is relatable. We all run into problems that leave us without a good solution. We all have parts of us that seem to be in opposition of other parts. Figuring out how to deal with the struggles and move forward is something we can relate to. Getting to know yourself and proceed accordingly is a life skill and it's one you get to watch Clara develop. A fun angelic tale that starts slowly. My rating: 4.25 out of 5
