The Powerless Series by Lauren Roberts

The quick cut: An ordinary girl poses as a psychic to survive in Ilya society. That gets harder when she saves an Ilyan prince and ends up in the Purging trials. 

A real review: 

 Elitist societies aren't a new thing, but they do keep everyone from meeting their potential. In this fantasy world, a sickness that left some with unique abilities threatens those who did not get them. 

 Paedyn has spent her life pretending to be something she's not. Born ordinary, she was raised by her father to be very observant. Leaving her appearing to be a psychic, she uses her talents to make it in a society that forbids the ordinary. Can she continue to remain under the radar? 

 I got the Owlcrate exclusives for the first three books in the series based on the descriptions alone - it sounded very Hunger Games, but from a different element. Having gotten finally through all of them, I can definitely say that it was worth it! The series starts slow, but gets better with each addition. 

 Paedyn is in an impossible situation considering that her existence is literally illegal. That situation is only worse since she saved one of the Ilyan prince and subsequently got added to the most recent Purging Trials. She continues to stand up to each new challenge and do what's necessary to survive. 

 The other major player in the series is Kai - who was raised to be an enforcer to the King. He struggles with what he's been expected to do versus with what he WANTS to do. That struggle very much is the center of his story. 

  A fantasy series with plenty of drama, romance, and action.
