The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

The Quick Cut: A teen girl with no one in her life except her older half sister finds herself suddenly rich when a mysterious billionaire dies and leaves her the majority of his fortune. Questions arise while she tries to find the connection between her and him. A Real Review: We always hope to win a fortune, but how would you respond if that fortune came from a mysterious benefactor? Would you be happy that the money made its way to your hands or would you be curious as to why? For teen Avery Grambs, the questions about why she was chosen to be the inheritor of a billions fortune is too much not to look into. Avery is a teen girl with nothing to her name and only one person that she can trust: her half sister, Libby. She spends what time she has trying to work to pay the bills and keep her grades high enough to get a scholarship for college and a better life. She's doing all she can to hold her life together when a strange man comes to town. He lets her know that she is one of the inheritors listed in the will of a billionaire who recently died in Texas. Why did this billionaire who has never even met her leave most of his fortune to her instead of his family? Is there a connection that she doesn't know about? I've heard so many people talk about this series and I finally decided to give it a try. This book pretty much immediately got filed under the category of "why didn't I believe the hype sooner?!?!?!". Avery goes through the equivalent of a Cinderella story, and deservedly so. She's so smart and has had so many unfortunate things happen to her that she deserved a break. Albeit, I don't think she expected the consequences of that fortune to be so complex. Then again, none of us ever expect life to get so complicated in general, do we? The entire time I was reading this book, I found myself thinking about The Royals series by Erin Watt. The grandsons in this book have a very similar personality to the brothers in that series. They also have that very likeable and intriguing vibe going about them that makes you wonder what secrets they're hiding. Of the four grandsons, the one that had me the most smitten for sure was Jameson. That boy could charm me off my feet any day if he existed in the real world. *sigh* This book also makes for a very solid start to a series. You get enough answers about what's going on to feel satisfied. At the same time, you don't get enough answers about the most burning questions to stop at just book one. I am so excited to read the next book in this series and can only hope it comes with more Avery and Jameson moments that make me blush. A clever book that starts a series of questions you won't want to stop asking. My rating: 5 out of 5
