The Depths by Nicole Lesperance

The quick cut: A girl who survived a free diving accident goes with for her mom's honeymoon with her new stepdad. Chaos ensues when the island they're at is not quite a paradise.

A real review:

Many people have imagined living on an island paradise, but what would you do if it turned out to be hell instead? How far would you go to escape it? These are real questions for Addie.

Addie is a competitive free diver who technically died for eight minutes in an accident. While she tries to recover, her mom and new stepdad honeymoon on Eulalie Island - an unusual paradise with unexplained phenomenon. Addie spends her time with 2 boys: one during the day who she is friends with and one at night who shows her the magical elements of the island. Will she uncover the truth behind the island's abilities?

I loved this story and already know it'll be one I reread in the future! It's one of those creepy stories that pulls you in with the beauty and imagery while it slowly prepares to pull the rug out. If you're a fan of horror, you'll enjoy this tale!

Addie is recovering from her free diving accident, albeit roughly. Her body isn't recovering as fast as she'd like and it's taking a toll mentally. So much of who she is has been wrapped up in the free diving that without it, she feels hollow. In a moment where she feels lost personally, this island "vacation" proves to be what she needs to find herself again.

The person Addie spends the most time with is Billy, the island caretaker's son. He's sweet and nice and just looking for companionship in many ways. I can't imagine being 15 and that isolated against your will. It's no surprise he ends up having unrequited feelings. He's a good fit though because he knows the island, but doesn't fully understand it's abilities.

A fun horror tale that speaks to your ability to push past the pain.
