The quick cut: A teen girl who left her hometown at nine years old returns after the horrors of the past start occurring again.

A real review:

Criminals exist everywhere and sometimes those who witness it are the most innocent of us all. If you witnessed a crime occur as a child, how confident would you be in what you saw years later? This is the struggle for Tessa.

Tessa left her hometown of Fayette, Pennsylvania at nine years old and never looked back. Now, she finds herself returning when all she'd like to do is never reappear. Tessa and her childhood friend were key witnesses in the trial of Wyatt Stokes, who is waiting on death row. Except Tessa felt pressured in the past to say she saw him when she was not confident. Is Wyatt a killer? Or will Tessa's questions cause the real one to appear?

I have a real mixed reading relationship with Kara Thomas as an author. I loved her book "That Weekend", but have struggled with her back catalogue. This book is another case of that. While I liked the premise of the story, it felt like there were far too many side storylines occuring to truly get invested in it all.

Tessa ran from the questions of the past and is being forced to deal with them now. I feel bad for what she's going through, especially since her family continues to not be there for her. I couldn't imagine going through that myself. The questions she's asking only continue to create problems.

A mysterious story that has too many storylines.

My rating: 3 out of 5
