Rules for Being a Girl by Candace Bushnell & Katie Cotugno

The Quick Cut: A teen girl finds her world view changed after an inappropriate encounter by a male teacher.

A Real Review:  Considering the world that we live in, you would think that we would be closer to equality between the genders. However, it is frightening how often women get abused, harrassed, and threatened. How would you react if it happened to you with someone that has power over you? This is the case for Marin.   Marin is a teen girl with a charmed life. She has a boyfriend, stellar grades, and is the editor of the school newspaper. All that is ruined though when a popular teacher named Mr. Beckett makes advances on her and kisses her. Afterwards, she finds that she can't turn off the new view of the world she has where women really are expected to follow rules and not shake the boat. Will her newfound view ruin her future plans or will she find a new hope instead?   I picked this one up after my nook app notified me of some new teen reads and the summary made me curious. Nook done me right bringing this one to my attention! It is such a strong and enlightening story of feminism that shows how even at a young age, you can bring light and better standards to your environment. It also shows the consequences of doing so, even when you're doing the right thing.   Marin is your stereotypical overachiever and seeing her life crash is relatable. Even if you're not that type A perfectionist personality, you can relate to the internal battle she goes through. You can't help but root for her as she stands for a better world for women.   I also appreciated the small but careful attention given to her grandmother. Marin is close with her grams, but she does battle dementia or Alzheimer's. Seeing those moments where her awareness slips while at others she is clear is very true to life. It doesn't play a big role in the story, but it's clear the authors took great care in every detail.   A powerful feminist story that will pull you in. My rating: 5 out of 5
