The Quick Cut: Four friends navigate their senior year before college. One will become the President of the United States in the future. A Real Review: Everyone likes to imagine what their future will look like and aim for lofty goals, but what would you do if you knew your future was as President? For one of these four friends, that is the case as they navigate their final year of high school. Ava, CJ, Jordan, and Martha have been friends since kindergarten. However, they're navigating their senior year now and on the precipice of their adult lives. Will they make their senior year one to remember? Or struggle with the challenges instead? This book is really sneaky in the way it makes you think it's about friendship, but it's about more than that. It's about how the moments in our lives fundamentally change who we are. Did you rise above the challenges in your way or cower in fear of them? Are you capable of accepting feedback or make others feel inferior for trying to give it? Each moment may seem small, but they add up quickly. I love that each of the four friends have their own unique challenges, but still help one another out when they can. One is struggling with low SAT scores risking her acceptance at her preferred college. Another is debating applying for art school. One goes looking for her biological mother. Another is trying to save a local neighborhood park. Their challenges and connections and support of one another feels realistic to life. I wish I had that supportive of friends at that age. I will say the friend who is the president in the future is super obvious. That I pretty much figured out from the start and didn't feel that surprising of a reveal. I wish the author would have telegraphed that less. A fun contemporary story about the moments that change us. My rating: 4.25 out of 5
