The quick cut: An orphaned girl is convinced her sister has been kidnapped by vampires and goes to great lengths to find her.
A real review:
While our world doesn't have fantasy creatures, can you imagine one where we live together? Could humans find a way to coexist with vampires? This is the world that Kidan lives in.
Kidan is convinced a vampire kidnapped her sister and is willing to do anything to get her back. In order to find who did it and get her back, she must go to Uxlay University and take her place as the head of her family's household. The problem? To do so, she must graduate from their program and live side by side with a vampire as her companion.
This book does a fun job of taking dark academia and making it NOT about magic. It's an interesting twist on a popular subgenre that's on many reader's shelves. There is a magical element with the rules and the human families who are connected to the vampires - but spells and witches aren't the core story.
Kidan has done terrible things to find her sister and to accomplish her goal, she'll need to do MANY more. Her family's dark past is a barrier though and it's unlikely to make that any easier. Seeing her slowly chip away at who she is as a person to get her sister back is an interesting one. What price would you pay to have family back?
Susenyos as the family's vampire is an interesting one because he immediately loathes Kidan, but also appears to have selfish intentions. He's terrifying to most on campus and has an awful reputation. By the time his true alliances are revealed, I found myself puzzled by his choices. Maybe I missed the point here, but it seems like he could have more effectively reached his goals in less violent ways.
A fun dark academia twist with vampires.
