Hunting Prince Dracula by Kerri Maniscalco

The Quick Cut: A girl starting at a new academy for forensic work finds life complicated when people show up dead appearing to be killed by a vampire.

A Real Review:

Historical fiction can be hit and miss, depending on how far you push the creative license. Do you stay true to the story of what happened or change it up a bit? With the story of Audrey Rose continuing on, she now finds herself up against a seemingly vampiric killer.

After the shocking truth of Jack the Ripper, Audrey Rose goes to Romania to the Brahn Castle to learn at a forensic science academy (Thomas Cresswell in tow). However, her past seems to follow when people show up dead apparently killed by a vampire.

The thing I like about this series is its dedication to authenticity. The scenery, the dates and location detailing with the new addition of Audrey Rose's PTSD really makes you believe in the material.  That being said, this book was a slow burn and I am impatient as all hell - so that took away from the fun for me.

Audrey Rose really hit a stride as a lead heroine in this sequel with how she believes in her power, refuses to be ignored, and truly becomes a feminist hero in the situation. It doesn't always get her what she wants, but it does make her somebody to be inspired by.

Thomas continues to be his charming self, but the banter between him and AR hits new levels here. They really do make a great pair that lighten up certain areas when things get really dark.

If you're a fan of the macabre, this book is a great read that delves into the fascinating Romanian history.

My rating: 4 out of 5
