14 Ways to Die by Vincent Ralph

The Quick Cut: A teen girl uses her new reality show platform to find the serial killer who murdered her mom. Emotions run high when the killer hunts her back. A Real Review: We all know that there are people out there who do bad things, but to have one take a parent away? That is a pain I cannot imagine. How would someone cope? Would they learn to move forward or try to solve the crime? For Jess, the answer is simple: solve her mom's murder. Jess lost her mom to the Magpie Man when she was seven. As the first victim, his nickname and fame started with the tragedy of her parent. Ten years later, the Magpie Man has killed thirteen women and no one has caught him yet. Jess uses the opportunity to star in a reality show to bring a platform to the crimes and find her mom's murderer. Except she starts getting frightening messages from someone claiming to be the killer. Is she next? This book is an odd read. It definitely falls into the suspense category, but at the same time the writing style ruins the tension. I get the short chapters are a stylistic choice on the part of the author, but I think the overall book would have been better with typical chapter lengths. Jess has spent her childhood mourning the death of her mom and has found a way to make strides in changing that. It's inspiring to see her try to solve that and fix a hole in her life. At the same time, I can't imagine being so desperate to do so that you're willing to let strangers watch you all day. I blame the age gap, but to me being that exposed is a nightmare. A suspense story that lets the writing style ruin the tension. My rating: 3.5 out of 5
